Ephrussi'sNewmatket, Bat ll'b (Hartley) 0 Betting : 5 to 4 agst Frontin, 4 to 1 Far i fadet, 8 to 1 Soukaras, 10 to 1 Regain, 12 to 1 I Vernet, 25 to 1 Otario, 33 to 1 each Stockholm, Ganimede, and Reubens, 40 to 1 each Robert Macaire and Attendez moi sous l'Orme, 100 to 1 each Faille, Newmarket, Florestan, Dard, Garrick, and Mandragore, and 200 to 1 Derviche. Above half an hour was consumed in false starts, of which as many as four occurred, Frontin and Farfadet, Soukaras and Robert Macaire being chiefly responsible for these fruitless attempts. At a quarter past 4 the flag fell to a moderately good start, Faille at once taking up the running, with Derviche as immediate attendant, the others running in the following order: Soukaras, Regain, Farfadet, Frontin, Ontario, Mandragore, Florestan, Dard, Stockholm, Attendez moi, sous POrme, Ganimede Rubens, Newmarket, Vernet and Garrick. For half a mile or more Faille set the running at a very warm pace, but opposite the stables he was eased, when Soukaras raced up to him, and climbed the hill with an advance of alengthorsojaftertheascent, however, M. Blanc's colt was done with, and Frontin, Vernet, Farfadet, and Regain assumed the first rank, whence Vernet soon retired beaten, the race home being confined to the three others, of whom Regain was the first to crack, Farfadet and Frontin drawing away, racing neck and neck, with alternations of place, till near the poßt the latter definitely assumed command, Farfadet, who was close to him on the left, seeming somewhat interfered with. The verdict was a neck in favour of Frontin ; Regain third, being beaten a couple of lengths; while Rubens passed the post fourth, Vernet fifth, Ontario sixth, and Ganimede seventh. Time, by Benson's chronograph, 2 mm. 34 2-sth sec. On returning to weigh in, the rider of Farfadet (Dodge) requested Count de Lagrange's representative to lodge an objection against the winner on the ground of foul riding. The evidence given, however, was not considered by the stewards to support this claim, and it was overruled, the verdict remaining undisturbed. Value of the 1 stakes, 117,675f. •
