General Estimates.
(PBOM ODB OWN CORRESPONDENT.) _. , „ . Wellington, June 28th. Ihe following are the general Estimates of receipts and expenditure of the Consolidated Fund for the current year 1883-4 :—
It is said that the detailed Estimates will not be distributed before Saturday or Monday. Wellington, June 29th. The Estimates were circulated to-night. The following are the principal increases on last year: — Legislative Council. — Chairman of Committees, £100 ; clerk, £100 ; clerk assistant, £50 ; second assistant, £25 ; contingencies,
£100. House of Representatives. — Second clerk assistant, £50 ; serjeant-at-arms, £50 ; interpreter, £25 ; reader, £50 ; record clerk, £50 ; contingencies, £30; expenses of members, £1055 ; library and mailman, £100. Audit, £438; valuation friendly societies, £800; charitable institutions, £20,000; fees to medical witnesses in lunacy cases, £150 ; patent officer, £75 ; patent office clerk, £50 ; expenses Court of Appeal, £300 ; fees, £25 ; inspector of prisons, £100 (also, £100 allowance in lieu of quarters) ; grant to Education Boards, £7000; training of teachers, £500; teachers' examinations, £100 ; masters Native schools, £500 ; board of pupils, Deaf and Dumb Institution, £130 ; Wellington College, £500 ; Native Land Frauds Commission, Wellington, £100 ; working railways— draftsman, £25 ; railway storekeeper, £200; Government Houses, Wellington and Auckland, each £100; post and telegraph offices, £500 ; Ministerial residences, rent, £50; Volunteer adjutants in Wellington, Nelson, Canterbury, and Dunedin, each £300 (new votes) ; extra pay police, long service, £3726 ; travelling expenses and transport of prisoners, £1000 ; repaid to Titanic Steel Company, £1750 ; Native Land Court surveys, £5000; rates payable under Crown and Native Lands Rating Act, £10,000 ; secretary Government Insurance, £100. These are principal increases over last year's votes. There are in addition, of course, nume rous small additions of £5 or so to cadets and local officers. The chief decreases are as follow : — Parliamentary Committee reporters, by £120 bonus ; Hansard staff, £70 ; Bellamys, £133 ; electric light for House, £3000 ; vaccination of Natives, £200 ; Departmental Buildings, £1000 ; Parliamentary Buildings, £1000 ; police stations, £1000 ; Hinemoa, £1000 ; Actuary Government Insurance, £100. I telegraphed the total of departmental Estimates last night. The Estimates show the following changes in Otago votes as compared with last year : — Dunedin Lunatic Asylum house- steward, reduced to £250 ; Resident Magistrates' travelling allowance increased, £36; cadet R.M. Court, reduced £20 ; Dunedin gaoler, reduced £35; matron, increased £20; Hurunui-Bluff railway, increased £70,344; Receiver Land Revenue, £400 (last year, nil).
