The name of one horse out of the 150 nominated is omitted from the ab^ve list. The handicap is in many respects an outrageous one, whioh is doubtless due to the absurd .new rule that no lighter weight than 6st 71b shall be carried in any handicap in Victoria. Bundoora, Segenhoe, The Drummer, and Morpeth have already been scratched. For the Sydney Metropolitan Stakes Commotion heads the list with 9st 121b ; Navigator carries the second highest weight — 9st 61b. In the Australasian of the 23rd ult., a week bofore the weights for the Melbourne Cup wore declared, betting transactions are given as follow •. — "The Maribyrnong Plate continues to be operated upon, and the run upon First King and Superba has been so consistent that they have reached 100 to 7. For the Derby, Warwick and Archie remain at 5 to I each, but 100 to 14 has been taken several times about Off Colour, and Martini-Henri has met with more support at 10 to 1. If anything is a favourite for the Melbourne Cup, it is Segenhoe, about whom wagers of 1000 to 30 and IQOO to 35 have been booked ; Merman receiving attention at 1000 to 30. For the double event, V.R.O. Derby and Melbourne Cup, Warwick and Segenhoe havo been supported to win about £40,000 at 1000 to 3, 4, and 5 Of the New Zealand-bred colt MartiniHenri, by Musket—Silvia, "Augur" writes: — " He inherits the family likeness from her, and for shape and make ho cannot be surpassed by anything engaged. 1 had the pleasure of an interview with him during my last trip to (■-Sydney, and I've mi hesitation in saying that so far as appearances go, he is equal' to either Goldsborough or Robin Hood. Whether he will prove so on the turf remains to he seen, albeit the Sydney correspondent of this journal asserts that he can do what he pleases with Aberfoyle and Co., and if this be correct then Mr White must have a real Derby horse, for Aberfoyle, Blue and White, and Kaipara were all above the ordinary average as two-year-olds, and if Martini-Henri can dispose ot them without much effort, then his Derby chance bears a most roseate hue. During the past week or two a considerable amount of money has been invested on the colt for the V.R.C. Derby and Melbourne Cup, and as most of this may have been for the stable, the owner of the colt may consider it advisable to reserve him for the Flemington campaign, but if he is forward enough a run in the A.J.C. Derby will rather improve his chance, for no less than eleven of our Derby winners had previously tried their hand in the three-year-old race of the A.J.C."
