MILTON.
(FROM A CORRESPONDENT.) Julys. Municipal.— At the meeting of the Milton B iough Oornuil, held last week, the Mayor (Mr K. Stewart) Intimated that he would prep ire a statement of the iinancul position of the boro gh, to lay before the Council, an'l the qmstioo of erecting municipal offl co would then be considered. Jt is to be h-'ped thatsome'hing definite will be done on this occasion. Tho mater has been brought up before several times, but always postponed. Political. — The election for Bruro took place on Friday last, and re-ulted in the return of Mr Jarnei M' Donald, of the Milburn lime kilns, by the small majority of 21. The Catholic block vote, which it was expected Mr M/gley would have received, was given to Mr M'Douald. Mr Gillies' supporters must hava been' at \york before the dawn of day, placarding all the shops with " Vote fqr Uillies," no distinction being made between those of parsons who intended to do so and opponents' premises, which, in the latter case, was recaivid in anything but a friendly spirit. Although certainly Mr M' Donald is not the most qualified man of the three candidates to represent tbe di'jt'-iot, the electors have chosen him to do so, and there is no reason that 1 can see why he should ncl make a very good member. He is very straightforward iv character, as oin eas'ly be geen on perusal of his addresses, and this no doubt has gone a long way to secure his return The Mar.uka Creek and Wangalna returns show that the electors at those places were unanimous in roti <g for Mr Gillies. Mr M'Donald was unable, through press of time, to address the constituents in thoae districts, or doubtless he would have secured a number of tho votes. The official declaration of the poll took i-lace at the Milton O urchouse .it noon yesterday. The R- turniu^-offlcer (Mr 11. R. J»nes) dec ared Mr M'Dona'd elected. The latter gentleman then address d the electors, and was followed ti.v Me«sra Gillies and Mo ley, after which Mr M'Donald drove away in a drag four-in-hand. Th« elector-* would fain have carried him to his conveyance bhonlder-hiyh, b t o^ingto Mr .\P Donald's Bize they had not the courase to make the attempt.
Hdssars.— A number of the Hilton contingent oi the Southern Hussars proceeded t > D inedin por the evening train on Saturday for the p-iipose of attending Government inspection parade that evening, and church parade the following day.
