G. IRELAND, M.H.R.

Died 15tu August, 1880. Hushod is each voice : a solemn whisper steals From bench to bench : his place is vacant now. Death passed unseen but two short nights ago, And laid his icy touch upon his brow. And he has passed away : a gentle man, In whose large heart no petty thought found rest, Whose rugged probity and simple truth In all things wrought together for the best. He wooed not greatness that was thrust on him ; His no vainglory, but an honest pride : Called from an humble hut to honour's seat, He served his country — in her service died. Peace to his ashes ! We had better spared A better man. A people's tribute tear Drop in his honoured grave, a country's wreath, And write above :— " A good man sleepeth here." Abdul.
