THE MELBOURNE MARKET.

Messrs R. Goldsbrough and Co. report, under date Melbourne, 17th September :—

Wool.— We held an auction sale to-day, and sold 346 bales, consisting principally of fellmongers' parcels of scoured, at about the same prices as those ruling at our last sale. There was good competition for merino scoured, but the lower sorts of cross-breds ard inferior lots were somewhat neglected. We only offered a few small lots of gieaay in ordinary condition, which sold up to 7f J per Im. Average scoured realised from Is to Is 3d per lb, and average to good, Is 3d to Is 7Jd per lb, the latter pace being obtained for 140 bales scoured.

Sheepskins. —Tuis market has been well supplied during the past week, a»-d wedispoßed of a full supply at quotations. The tone of the nwrket was firm, but no advance on late rates was secured. Butchers' green skins realised up to 5s each ; do dry skins, up to 4s ; dry station skins, from 2d to 6d per lb ; crosabreds are much neglected. Hides.— Our sales have been well attended throughout the past week, and we cleared a full supply at quotations. Heavy, sound hides command attention ; light and inferior are neglected. Sound calfskins, free from cuts, are saleable up to 2}d per lb. Oxhides (average) realised from 16s to 21s each ; cowhides (average), from 2d to 2Jd per lb; Victorian salted (large), 2Jito 3d per lb; medium, 2Jd to 2jd per lb ; light, l|d to 2Jd per lb. JSew Zealand heavies are in fair request.

Tallow.— We cleared out a full supply at our auction sale hold yesterday, and obtained late rates. The tone of the market is steady. Mntton (besr, f.0.b.) realised up to £,iS 5a per ton ; do (average) realised up to £27 10s per ton ; beef (average) realised up to £26 6i per ton ; mixed (average), from £19 to_ £25 psr ton. Wheat.— We have not held an auction sale this week, but have sold 239 bags by private contract. The market is easier, and we now quote prime milling, 6s ; medium to good, 5s 5d to 5s lOd ; and inferior to medium, 4s 8d to 6s 2d per bushel. F our. — During the week we quitted a parcel of Sudhoby'u Latimuk at £12 10s, which price, however, was njt nnintftined at auction to-day We quote good country at from £11 16s to £12, and town-milled, £12 10s per ton. Bran several parcels have been quitted at from Is 4d to Is 4Jd, and pollard, Is 3d per bushel. Oats — We report a steady market, and have disposed of several parcels at quotations, viz : — Good feed, 3a 2d to 3s 4d ; medium t j good, 2s lid to 3s Id ,* and inferior, from 2s 8d ; prime milling, 3s 6d to 3s 7d; and bright oats for racehorses, to 3s 8d per bushel.

Barley. — All coming forward finds ready purchasers at the following rates :— Prime milting, 6s 9d ; medium to good, 5s 9d to 6s rJd ; inferior to medium, 5i to 5a 8d ; Cape and Oregon, from 3s 6(1 to 3s Btl per bushel.
