BOATING.

. . WALTER FOURS. . , ; The first race for the Walter Fours in cbn« ■ nection with the Otago Rowing Olub took place on the 23rd inst., when the weather was really splendid. The following were the crews :,— Rob Roy-— Bridges (bow), 'l Oat. • 61b.; 0. Hope (2), list Sib.; S. Turtqa .(3), - 12at.; Cook, list. 8lb,; JRtgg, cox. Lurline— F. Chapman (bow) liar Rib.; N. Kettle (2), Hat. 31b.; J.B. Hackworth' (3), Hat Blk.y Aspinall, list. lOlbs. Th© course farfrfon. tiie second red beacon to the eastern end of , t^ie Jetty street Jetty. 1 An excellent start k , Was effected, and 'the crews kept stroke and 'stroke for a considerable distance. The race was very exciting, the Rob, Roy,, winning by ' about a length. ■ ' - ■ "> , ■ . . ! The Btcond heat for this event was rowed" on the 24th on very lumpy water between the following crews :— M'Laren (bow), Jobson (2)) Hart (3), Fenwick (stroke); Hosking (bow), Vickcrmann (2), Oollinson (3), • Johnston . (stroke), and resulted in an easy win for ;Fen«

wick's crew. , ; The crews got away very level, and rowed neck and neck till the near beacon w. as reached, when Fenwick began to fo.rge slowly, but steadily, ahead. A little beyond this one of Johnston's crew had the misfortune to lose his oar, a heavy sea striking it and knocking it completely out of his hands. In our opinion it did not materially affect the result, as at the time Fenwick was leading by a clew length, and was full of go. The final heat in the "Walter fours" event was fixed for Saturday afternoon, and shortly after three o'clock the winning crews of the previous heats — Cook's and Fenwick's — proceeded to the starting point, the former rowing again in the Rob Roy and the latter in the Lurline. A pretty even starfe was effected, but at almost the first stroke Cook's No. 3 had the misfortune to break a rowlock, so that the race was virtually a "walk over " for the Lurline. An this is one of the " chances of war," Penwick's crew wins the Cup.
