ENGLISH NEWS.

We extract from our file of Hobart Town papers the following Home intelligence up till the 3d of July :— Her Majesty and all the Royal Family were in excellent health, and were residing at Osborne House, having left London on the 28th June. Consols. — Three per cent. 96 J £. Three per cent, reduced 27*- \. Parliament were sitting, and the only important measures were the Papal Aggression . Bill and the Jewish Disabilities Bill, which had nearly passed through the different stages, and may now be considered as passed. The former Bill was to be read a third time on Friday July 4th. At last it has been decided, by a Bill passed in the British Parliament on the 24th June, that Smithfield market, London, is to be removed.

Four large steamers were advertised for Australia, two for Sydney, and two for Melbourne, to carry passengers at a low rate. The following are the steam vessels of the General Screw Company which, it is expected, will have the contract for the conveyance of the Australian mails, via. the Cape :—Bosphorus, 586 tons ; Propontis, 560 ; Hellespont, 536 ; Sir Robert Peel, 320; City of London, 272; City of Rotterdam, 272 ; and Earl of Auckland, 450 ; being seven vessel^with a tonnage of 3266 ; and four vessels of 6150 tonnage building. The three first named vessels have already made trips to the Cape. An alarming fire took place ia Southwark, London, by which property to the amount of upwards of £109,000 was consumed, but was generally insured. The bulk of the property belonged to Alderman Humphrey. The Industrial Exhibition was visited, on Tuesday July Ist, by upwards of 67,000 persons, at the charge of Is. each. Thousands of people were still arriving in London from all parts of the world, to witness the Exhibition. From all accounts, says the " Times," the success of the undertaking in a commercial point of view, and with reference to exhibitors, is likely to be quite as great as it is now certain to be financially and with regard to the Royal Commission. Many of the most remarkable contributions have been bespoken for purchasers when the display terminates, and extensive orders have been given, founded on ex- ! amples of excellence, in the various manufactures produced. The directors of the Southampton Chamber of Commerce are endeavouring to procure the despatch of the Cape mail steam ships from Southampton instead of Plymouth. Captain Hogg and Mr. Owen have been appointed commissioners to proceed to the Cape of Good Hope to inquire into the cause of the disturbance there.

We regret to announce the decease of the late Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, the Earl of Cottenham, after so early a retirement from public life. His Lordship died at Pietra Santa, in the Duchy of Lucca, on the 29th of April, in the 71st year of his age. The Hon. Charles Edward Pepys, born in 1824 (Clerk of the Crown in Chancery,) has succeeded his deceased father as Earl of Cottenham. Four other sons and six daughters survive their noble and distinguished parent. The following deaths are also recorded: — Lord Langdale, late Master of the Rolls, Sir William Morrison, M.P., for Kinross ; the Earl of Bantry, Viscount Newry, and Mr. Thomas Harrison, Commissioner of Excise. Alderman Salomons, a Jew, was returned a member of Parliament for the borough of Greenwich, on the 27th June, by a majority of 897 over Alderman Weir. On Saturday, June 28, the heat was so excessive throughout thexlay in London that several horses dropped down dead, and a gentleman who was witnessing the inspection of the guards in St. James' Park was carried oft' to the hospital insensible. It was found that he was labouring under a " coup de soleil." The Peninsular and Oriental Company's steamer, " Singapore," which lately arrived at the Cape from England, after a passage of 37 days, had on board specie for the military chest to the amount of £75,000 ; and an additional sum of £225,000 is to be transmitted. One of the principal prizes in Greek at a late examination in the University of Edinburgh was borne off by a blind student, a native of Dunkeld. He had used in his studies extracts from the books he was examined in, printed in raised characters, which he traced with his fingers. Despatches were received, June 5, at the Colonial Office from the Governor of New Zealand.

Observations.— Dryness lias been the prevailing feature of this month. In previous October months— that is, in 1848, 1849, and 1850— we were visited with storms of snow and hail. The October now past has been marked only in a slight degree by the same feature : still the distant hill-tops were once or twice whitened with snow. We have not heard of the ravages of the caterpillar to any extent as. - yet amongst the young: wheat. So much for the wisdom of sowiag in Aprtt-instead of July aad August.
