The Otautau Standard AND WALLACE COUNTY CHRONICLE. Tuesday, sEPTEMBER 19th 1905. COUNTY ELECTIONS.

With the county elections coming on directly, there is a favourable opportunity to have an expression of opinion from candidates regarding the vexed question of dual control of the Main Street, of Otautau, and the collection and expenditure of rates levied by the council for the upkeep of same. The County Council is by far the most important public body m the county, and Las control of large stttns of money and the supervision pf nearly all the important public 'wqrks undertaken ■throughout .JiliQ:diairict,.-_ It is a very uig -employer- of t&bprir, 'and, • generally speaking, cQmmamfe,tb.e attention of every ratepai^.H'ii thejeou'nty. Very little fault can be. found wjfcb,. the administration "•-.of its affairs hitherto. While errors m -fudgmettt" have been made, it baa, on the" whole, shown a great deal of care and wisdom m its management, and that- fairly general satisfaction is given by its' members, is shown by the fact many of them have repeatedly been re-elected to a seat at i's table. ,The relationship existing between the Council and the T-.wn Bo r i has always been of a cordial naiim:, and" m all matters where the two bodies have . had dealings together, the . utmost harmony has prevailed. Several efforts have been made to get the Council, to hand over to the Town Board the .administration and control of the Main Street, and this, so far, the, Council has nojb seen fit to do. The elections give ratepayers a good opportunity of sounding aspiring candidates as to their attitude orr this question. There is a very unanimous opinion among ratepayers m the town that the street should'be controlled by the local Board. No friction whatever need arise between the two bodies over the matter. The council has the present control, rating power . and upkeep, and would be entitled to a fair consideration for handing over the same to the Board. There is, howe er, no question^ whatever that the liourd would be the most satisfactory administrator, "• and that it woul . be to the advantage of the^ratepayers m the town- that it should control its own streets.--^The ratepayers have the p wer entirely m their own hands, and can exert sufficient Voting power to command attention " being paid to their wants.. We trust an expression.oi' opinion, will be asked from ail candidates. • •
