As the date of the Winton Braes Band Contest, draws near, interest gets keener, and the members of the Wiuton Brass Band, are putting m vigorous practice accordingly. Ten bands have entered for the contest, as follows :— Gore, Balolutha, Bluff, Wyndham, Eiverton, Nightcaps, Tuapeka, Milton, Winton, and Alexandra Four or five entries for the solo competitions have b«en received from members of the Winton Band, and there is likely to be keen competition m this class. Six nominations-have been receiyed for the position of judge, and the choice of the Winton Band has fallen on Mr Stratton, of Dunedin, who was judge at the last Invercargill contest.

A capital opportunity of acquiring some choice dairy cows will be afforded by Bale, to take place on the 27th inst., at the Otautau sale yards. On that day the National Mortgage aud Agency Company will offer by auction the splendid dairy herds of Messrs Andrew Salton aud Jaa. Matheson, who are giving up d ikying. In all 35 cows will be offered and there is sure to f been ktten competition for them. '
