The Ni'h'eapfe Bra^s Band, which has nn!y b^esi m exNtnioo (<>• a o .i«^a ti»eiy b f pi d. has re-'e- t!y been acsor ed * b> nufit, th- result? of v ich hays* exceeded the most onnsmine -xpeo^iti-'nv of its proiii' ter*. liid-ed 't 'nay -afoh be so i I that no coin ry band ki the i:> lony has been ho liberally deftlt with ty the publio on any similar occa?ion. The he efi- was m lhe fo v m of a bazunr and pro luce *xhihiiio:i, held m Mrs Griffio'.-j hall on the 3rd, 4th, and sth|inst. A commit' ee of ladies for many months past had assiduously laboured with a view of having something tan^iole to hand over toward 1 * defray int; the co*t of uniforms and instruments. A plentiful supply of evergreens had bo_u brought into requisition for deoor*ting the ball, and w->rn artistically arranged under the supervision f the'bandminter, Mr T. Burten«baw, 1 .0 effect being very fiiie. The proceeding* weie formerly opened by Mr J. 0. Clapp, Viae-pretident of the band, who, m a few well -chosen remarks, outlined the band from its infancy, and wxplained its position financially. He then had muoh fdeainre m introducing to the vast asesemba*e present the various stallholders, m fanov oostumts. who Went through some beautiful evolutions nnder the oonductorship of their euergetio seoretary, Mr D.C. McKe'zie, after which they all lined off to their respective posts. The hall was orowded each night, and the business done was simply astounding, considering tha spade wai 80 cramped, One of the leading features of the bazaar was a beauty competition. Eaoh young lady (of whioh there were IS who faoed the starter, Mr D. C. Met., naie) bed her name placed 01 a blackboard, wbich showed the number of votes reoorded m favour of each. Any spectator was allowed one vcte for a penny, and on the last night of the bazaar the eompetit* had been narrowed down to three, two from Nightcaps and one from Wairio. Nightcaps eventually won, with Wairio second. Altogether 6897 votes were reoorded, representing a sura of £28 14a 9d. On the 7th a sale was held of the unsold goods, and by 10 o'oiock the bazaar was a thing of the patt. The total takings for the three nights amounted t) £171 19s, and it is expeoted that the expenditure will not amount to moie than £30, so that the band will be plaoed up >n a' very sound footing.
