The Otautau Standard AND WALLACE COUNTY CHRONICLE. Wednesday, August 2nd, 1905.

ELECTION OF COMMITTEES. The question raised by JMr Horrell as tbe annual meeting of the Wallace A. and P. Association, which led to so much discussion, and which, from the exhibitions of feeling at times prominent m the meeting, showed that the point was one that requires settling, it an important one. There is no doubt the intention of the Society's regulations is that every member should be placed upon an equality m the matter of nominating or being nominated on to the committee of -; managnmeat. While we think tho chairman act<;d wisely and followed .the only really Sensible course open ; r to inert f'6 difficulty, hy allow. nfj-jnomimttiona - 10 be re'«e : vefl at the ■meeting, it dokß riot appear to u« that this 'course would be always practicable, as i« the event of a large number, of candidates being proposed at the mpeting, the preparation of voting papers and sub=ie<iuent 'making up of returns>wou!d tend to unduly drag a meeting out to unearthly hours. Nearly every ' gnoiety of a kindred nature has embodied m its by-laws some provision for nomination to its board of management .bein^deposited with the seoretary for a specific time before its annual meeting, and we see no difficulty m the Wallace A. and P. Society complying with the regulations it has, and still placing each of its members on an equality. This could be done without undue pressure by way of extra work on its secretary, and' also without very heavy expenditure, by the usual course of advertising m good time that nominations would be received up to a certain date. This course is followed m ; the majority of cases, although some societies with ten times the membership send a circular to each member. Now that the grievance hf*s^ been ventilated, no doubt the directors will prevent a repetition of the trouble before next year, and from perusal of the by-laws the whole machinery appears embodied within them to permit of this being done, and thus satisfying the demand that has been made.
