NEW YEARS' SPORTS.

On Wednesday, the first day of the year 1890, the usual Sports will be held m the paddock belonging to Mr Peter Wright, adjoining the East Oxford railway station, when, m addition to the children's races, &c, we notice that liberal prizes are offered for the Men's Grand Handicap, of 100, 220, and 440 yards, l the first prize will be £3, ■ and the second a trophy valued at £1 2s 6d. There will be a Hurdle Race (over eight flights of hurdles), and a Handicap Mile Race, the first prize m each event being 30s, and the second 10s. There will also be many other events, which the Committee, not yet having held their final meeting, have not yet decided. But there - is one to which we must call the attention of the mothers of Oxford, and that is the Baby Show. Now for babies, whether they come singly, doubly, or even more at a time, we think : Oxford can hold its own against any other place under the'- bun; : arid

we fully expect to see better specimens of this article of local production than any which can be produced at the rival show m Christchurch, and we presume — though we do not know — that the public will be made to undertake the onerous duty of judging the merits of the rival claimants for first honors. The Oxford Brass Baadwillbe m attendance, and given fine weather, , we predict a big success.
