Mr 11. K. Wilkinson was a passenger iat Christchurch by the second express yesterday. Mr Harold G. Miller, M.A., of Wellington, this year's New Zealand Rhodes scholar, expects to leave for England next; month.
A Wellington Press Association telegram states that Sir Heaton Rhodes was yesterday sworn in as Minister of Defence. Constablo Armstrong (son of Mr Charles Armstrong), who has been stationed at Invercargill for some timo past, has been transferred to Auckland.
Mr P. Dalrymple, of the local Lands and Deeds Registry Offioe, left for Wellington yesterday to taJco over relieving duties in the department. Mr Alexander Craighead, owner and lioensco of the Royal Hotel, Waimate, died on Wednesday nigiit, aged 65 years, after three years' illness (says a Waimat© Press Association telegram). Tho deceased was a native of Glasgow, and arrived in Timaru 47 years ago, after three years at sea. Ho had a hotel at Rakaia before coming to Waimate 14 years ago. Mr E. D. Mosloy, S.M., who lias been taking tho combined districts of Gore and Central Otago for somo time past, has received notification ol his transfer to tho Timaru district. Mr E. C. .Levrey, S.M., from Greymouth, will transfer to Otago Central, while Mr A. W. Mowlen, S.M., of Auckland, who was recently appointed to tho magistracy, will take the Gore district.
The Rev. R. H. Knowles Kempton, of the Hanover Street Baptist Church, left by the second express yesterday for the north on his way to Hastings. Mr Kempton will conduct the services at the Hastings Baptist Church for two Sundays, in place of the Rev. H. E. Edridge, who will be absent on mission* work elsewhere. Mr Edridge will conduct missionary meetings at the Hanover Street Church early in September. A gathering representative of stock agents, stock buyers, audi farmers met in the 'Overseas Club Room on Wednesday' night to do honour to Mr Mee, who has relinquished the position of auctioneer for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company to take up the management of another business in this city. Mr De Maus was voted to the chair, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Mr J. A. Mathewson proposed the toast of thei evening, and after speaking of Mr Mee's many good qualities, presented him, on behalf of the meeting, with a substantial roll of notes. Another important toast was "The Army and Navy," proposed by the chairman, and responded to by Captain Redmond. The musical arrangements were in' the hands of Mr J. A. Haggitt, ant? items were rendered by Messrs S. G. Angell, Captain Zeisler, Captain Redmond, John Leech, E. Mee, E. Kerr, De Maus, and Haggitt.
