The Christchurcli papers state that tho two horses Tan a dead heat for first place. Several of the leading owners in Auckland have' convened a meeting, to be held to-nigtit, to discuss the reduction of racing. All the local owners have been circularised, and it is exported that the meeting will be a thoronghlv representative one. -The object-of the meeting is no (lonbt to guard the interests of owners by inducing the District Committee to cnt out the least important fixtures when making tho reauction of dates for next season. A bit of a sensation was caused recenHy in Melbourne by a leading trainer, Charles Wheeler, being disqualified for 12 months. Wheeler started a mare named Goldsliot in the First Division Handicap at the F.psom meeting, for' which she ruled at an outside price. Goldsliot finished fifth, and her running was challenged bv the stewards, the upshot of an inquiry being that Wheeler, the lockey Hart, and the mare were ruled out for 12 months. Wheeler carried the matter in an appeal to the Victoria Racing Club, but that bodv upheld the disqualification. Wheeler has trained tlij winners of many raoes, The Parisian (Melbourne and Australian Cups), Patrobus (Y.R.O. Derby and Melbourne Cup), Qneen o' Scots (Newmarket Handicap), and Shepherd King (Canlfield Cup) being the most noteworthy. He' owns an establishment at Canlfiejd, and his disqualification is one of the most sensational events that has been chronicled for a long time in connection with Australian racing.
