The cause of the fire at Ashton-under-Lyne (a suburb of Manchester) is -unknown, but it is believed the explosion' ■was due to the fusing of some electric wires. There were 70 employees in the premises. The manager ran through tho building to warn the employees, but was himself killed. _ Meanwhile firemen endeavoured to extinguish the outbreak, but their efiorts proved'in vain. There was a complete stoppage yesterday at all the mills within two miles of the explosion, owing, to'the damage.' It is expected that Dnkinfield (a smal] neighbouring suburb) >will be without gas for the next three months. FORTY-NINE PEOPLE KILLED. EXPLOSION DUE TO EIRE. Australian and N.Z. Cable.
