FIRE AND EXPLOSION
CAUSE OF DISASTER UNKNOWN. ENORMOUS DAMAGE DONE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. Australian and X.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, Jane 15. The cause of the fire at Ashton-under-Lyne (a suburb of Manchester) is -unknown, but it is believed the explosion' ■was due to the fusing of some electric wires. There were 70 employees in the premises. The manager ran through tho building to warn the employees, but was himself killed. _ Meanwhile firemen endeavoured to extinguish the outbreak, but their efiorts proved'in vain. There was a complete stoppage yesterday at all the mills within two miles of the explosion, owing, to'the damage.' It is expected that Dnkinfield (a smal] neighbouring suburb) >will be without gas for the next three months. FORTY-NINE PEOPLE KILLED. EXPLOSION DUE TO EIRE. Australian and N.Z. Cable. Association and Reuter. LONDON, June 16. (Received June 17, at 5.5 p.m.) The Press Bureau reports that 41 people are dead and 130 injured.: A fire caused the explosion. The majority of the workpeople escaped.
