SYDNEY SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, September 27. (Received September 27,- at 5.15 p.m.) R. W. Hoath, of Victoria, won the (Sydney Singles Championship in lawn tennis. OPENING OF THE SEASON. THE RO3LYN CLUB. The Roslyn Lawn Tennis Club had very unpropitious weather for its eleventh official opening on Saturday. Some 80 players and friends were in attendance, in response to the invitation of the president (Mr J. L. Salmond). Mr Thomas Begg, president of the Otago Lawn Tennis Association, was present, and, at the request of Mr Salmond, ui a congratulatory speech declared the season opened. Mr J. S. Nicolson, vice-presi-dent of the Provincial Association, congratulated tho Roslyn Club on being the first of the Dunedm clubs to have four courts available for players, and wished the club every success. Air Salmond, in his remarks, said that every year from its inception Roslyn had made progress, and this year the new court, with its completed wire-netted fence enclosure, 12ft high, would promote the playing comfort of members. Mrs J. L. Salmond dispensed were specially appreciated. Tho proceedings terminated with the singing- of the National Anthem and clieens for the King, also for the members of t'he club who had gone with the Expeditionary Forces. THE ARTHUR STREET CLUB. Tho Arthur Street Tennis Club opened its fourth season on Saturday under very unfavourable weather conditions. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, thc-re was a large attendance of membersand friends. Mr Pinel (vice-president), in declaring the season opened, apologised for the absence of tho president (Mr Edgar), who was una/ble to be present. After Mr Pinel had delivered tho first game service to Miss Edgar, daughter of the president, the members and friends adjourned to tho pavilion to partake of excellent refreshments provided by Mrs Edgai\ During the afternoon the courts were visited 1 by Messrs T. Begg and J. S. Nicolson (president and vicepresident resiK'ctively of the Otago Lawn 'tennis Association). Further play being impossible, a dance was held in the 'hall, kindly lent by the school committee, and both young and old spent an enjoyable afternoon.
