HUNTLY MINING DISASTER
LOCAL EFFORTS FOR RELIEF OF THE DESTITUTE. A largely attended demonstration was held in the Triangle yesterday afternoon, at wihich collections were made in aid of tho fund for the relief of the widows and children of tho millers who lost their lives in tho Huntly mining disaster. The demonstration was organised by tho Dunedin Drivers' Union, and Mr W. E. J. Maguire, secretary of the union, presided. Mr J. M'Donald, an ex-Mayor of Dunedin, spoke briefly,, making a strong appeal to all to give liberally for the assistance of those left unprovided' for. A number of other speakers also addressed the gathering, and at the closo the Mayor (Mr J. B. Shaddock) thanked those who had attended and contributed to the fund. The St. Kilda Brass Band and the Dunedin Pipe Band were in attendance, and rendered selections, and vocal items were contributed by Mrs Power and Mr Leech. Over £20 was collected for the fund, and more is expected to come in still. A very successful sacred concert was given in the Otagon Hall last night by Mr W. Paget Gale and the members of the Knox Church Choir. Mr/ Gale played "Funeral March and Hymn of Seraphs" (Guilmont), and the Second Andantino in D flat (Lcmare). Tho choir sang tho following anthems:—"Crossing the Bar," "Evening and Morning,'' "Sum of my Soul." and "As Pants the Hart," in which Miss H. Hodge took the solo part. Miss May Walton sang "O Divine Redeemer" (Gounod) very tastefully, and Mr A. R. Petersen gave ' an excellent rendering of "Thou'rt Passing Hence" (Sullivan). Tho Rev. W. Walker, who has lived in Himtly, made a very sympathetic appeal to the audience prior to the collection being token up, and the very creditable amount of £14 10s was received in aid of the Huntly Mining Disaster Fund.
