RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. IFbou Uuu Own CoßßitspoNDiirr.}

CIIRISTCHURCII, August 1.

The weather conditions at Riccarton thia morning wero almost perfect, though tho emoko lrom the adjacent fines m>ido it somewhat difficult to distinguish several of tho distanco discs. G. Jones was tho first trainer out, and ho sent Chortle a gallop on the eand over a mile, a distance that wae left 'behind in lrain 47eec; Multiply defeated Kinbombi over seven furlongs in lmin 34sec. Both Chortle and Multiply have boon carrying substantial weights in their gallops sinco coming to Riocarton, and both appear to be galloping very well. Raupani was going very nicely while getting to tho end of six furlongs in lmin 18isec. Stroller reeled off half a milo in 52 l-seeo. Stevedore was going better than Chrysoti at tho end of sovon furlongs, run in lmin 32seo—a very good gallop. Stargazcr and r'iregod covered half a mile in 53 l-ssec. Hunehaka and The Polo occupied lmin 6sec while running fiyo furlongs. Troon got to the end of a mile gallop in lmin ify&cct Ovar (Shaw) went, once round over tho schooling hurdles, giving an improved display. Silver Blaze went onco round over the big country. Ngatiruanui, Stockade, and Chitmoa were companions in a round 6ver tho hurdles, tho two former giving a good display, but Chatmos gave a wretched exhibition. Ho stopped at the second hurdle, and attempted to repeat the performance at every obstacle. The exhibition given by Stockade wiae a particularly good one, and ho was going even ootter than JN'g.itiruanui throughout. Iliad's Hero rattled over half a milo in 50 3-seec. Trilby occupied 50 4-sscc while getting- to the end of a similar journey. True Blue pleased much more than Undo Jim in a round over tb& big country, and tho grey gelding gave his usually clean display. Cheddar put up an excellent performance in easily defeating Admiral Soult over seven furlongs in lmin 32src. This gallop constituted ono of the best of the morning. Branscombo jumped nino flights of hurdles in very boTd style. Mummer and Twelfth Night finished together after running half a mile in 50iscc. Royal Medal and Sportsman were given good naif-paco -work. Tolstoi jumped safely in a round over the steeplechase fences, tho former jumping in his wmally safe manner. Obligate attempted to run off at the first fenec, but lafterwarde gave a much, improved l display. Morning ran six furlongs in lmm 22sec, and Andrea ran the last half mile of a six-furlong fallop in 5+ 3-seec. Umeraboy took 54 4-ssec to rim half a milo. Bon wont a furlong further in lmrn sisec. A lot of interest was centred in a trial over the bin- country between Captain Jack, (A. Rae), Bercola (CopesUke), Thn Doolan (R. Patterson), Peary (F. W. M'Cabe), and Silrcr Monarch (A. Julian). Silver Monarch and Bcrteola l<xl over tho first fence, with Peary noxi, and Tim Doolan and Captain Jack last. All the" , horses were jumping beautifully. Captain Jack, if anything, being the most accomplished fencer. Silver Monarch and Bercola were together as the fence m front of the etand was reached, and this pair and Peary wero then pulled up. Captain Jack antl Tim Doolan then went another round, and of the pair tho former appeared to bo going the batter at the finish. The performance all round was a very fine one,' although Peary did not gain many friends as a result of hie display. Silver Monarch ie an especially fine mover, and showed a lot of pace. R-encontre and Golden Water were given a useful gallop over six furlongs. Diavolo went a eimihvr journey at threequarter pace Slogan and Briar Patch registered an attractive performance in getting to tho end of ek furlongs in lmin 17 4-ssec, while tho Martian filly defeated' Eagleetono over five furlongs in lmin 6sec. Gregory ran fivo furlongs in lmin Bsce. Hereford and Sir Lethe ran eix furlongs at a good three-quarter pace. Banian, Forest Belle, and Idealism covered six. furlongs in lmin 19sqc. Martial did three-quarter pace work. Kilmeny woe indulged in easy pacing. Grand Idea spurted half a mile in 53 4-sseo. Corrie moved very nicely while getting to the end of a mile in lmin 47ecc. Tannhauser (F. E. Jones) finished several lengths ahead of Thrax in a sprint over half a mile in 51sec—a nice gallop. Black Lupin did steady pacing. Amber-and-white defeated Listen over sevc.ni f lui'ongs in lmin 35£ see. Chorale put up a good gaHop in getting to the end of half a mfle- in 51sec. Glenroy easily beat Qarolue over five furlongs in lmin ssbc. Grey King (Flynn) did not give by any moans a good display over a round of the hurdles with Morecambe (F. M'Cambn), whiJo Gnome was going better tihan Silver Shield at the end of six furlongs in lmin 21 Sunbeam and Sam Pan, ran seven furlongs in lmin 34iscc. Sea King and Mumura rattled over fivo furlongs in lmin 7sec.

"The Looken On" ■writes in the News — " Beacon does not look half tho horse ho did when hero before. He has a big kn«e now, and is sore. I doubt if ever he will get to the front in tho National Hurdles. Simrose is a big jumper, but very green yet. The big country will be too much for him. Grey King is an accomplished hurdler. His allowing this morning -was a good one. Ho will probably be taken over to Sydney to compete at the A.J.C. spring meeting. Cheddar galloped a. nioo mile. One w»teh made it a very brilliant effort Personally I timed him the last six, and he would have had to put up a record for the first two to have run the mile-in the time credited to him. Peary tried to shirk the first fence of his schooling task, and then jumped the doublo very badly. Ho went straight enough at the rest of the jumps, but got over them in o, slovenly manner. He showed plenty of pace. Query dashed over three furlongs up the hack in brilliant style, but broke down badly while doing it. It was his off foreleg that went. Ohakca was very tired when ne fell to-day. One knee got a. very bad , knock. Somethinisr went wrong with Otntara after jumping threo hurdles. I don't think he is any good, when Ohftkca (whose public form fliae been wTotched) could beat him so easily. It is reported that all is not well with Admiral Soult. I did not see him on tho track today. Captain Jack is afcill showing signs of * soreness, and , is being exercised alongside a hack. He jumped like a good one to-day, but was very tired at ■bhe end of his task. The Spaniard did mike of steady pacing. Ho is putting on condition. Bransfiekl will not rcquiro much schooling to make him a proficient hurdler. Ho jumped nino hurdles to-da.y in much better style than he did last time ho was schooled. Btrcola schooled better to-day thsii I ever saw him do before. His time in his task of once round tho big fences is the fastest I havo ever seen put up by any horse. It waa a great picco of work, and he puJled up well. Tim Doolan galloped and jumped in good style, and had Captain Jack well beaten a>t the end, and pulled up well, bnt is looking perhaps a bit too light. Tannhauser, wiho sprinted woll, will bo Mr Buchanan's elect for the Winter Cup. Chrysotis galloped in particularly good stylo over serein furlongs. If sho happens to hrjrin well sho will bo hard to beat in whatever she starts. Mummer was anxic-asJy watched, but was comfortably beaten by Twelfth Night. Julian hurt ono of his tondons when ho crashed into a hurdle the other day. He has not been worked since, and is a doubtful starter at tho meeting. Morccambc goee at his fences very fast, but ho fails to get wp high enough to clear them, and hits thorn very hard. Stevedore does not gallop as well as ho was doing a couple of weeks ago, yet the times ho is registering are good."
