MINING.

Thoro was no woeh-up on tlio Riso and Rhino No. 2 dredge on Saturday.

The master of the Mamiherikia, in reporting a return of 230z for a week's work, ebates that the drift hae been very heavy. Jiy mistake the hist rrtiirn from the Ladysmith Gold Dredging Company was reported as lloz I2dwt, instead of, as it actually was, 77<>z 12dvrt. The master of tho Golden Bed ( dredgo telegraphed to the secretary on .Saturday stating that repairs woro boinjr effected, and that in consequence there would bo no wash up for tho past week. Tho manager of tho Waiting! Consolidated mine, Tararu, reports that, Oho ore to hand from tho western section of No. 3 level, last wook was of good grade, dabs of gold having been soon. A sample taken from tho loco gave ftii encouraging assay value. A further distance of 3ft was driven east from No. 5 crosscut in No. 2 level, making a total dietanco of 18ft. Tho footwall branch was etill bearing to tho south. There was about 7ft of country between, tho two branches A further distance, of sft lws been driven west on the Now roof, in the Kiiranui mine, Thames. The counti-y was still nice firm undeeito, with numerous mineral seams crossing tho face. Tho quartz broken vrae of a kindly naturo, and was carrying a good clfiss of bright minerals. Tho crosscut was advanced a further 10ft, and several leaders woro crossing; the face. Tho leader to which reference was mado in a telegram list week measures 18in in width, and tho quartz shows a nice class of oopper pyrites. Tho drive on the. Middle Parallel reef in tho Watchman mine, Tararu, was driven north 18ft last week, making a total of 200 ft from tho end of the No. 1 rise. The reef wae email, but to all appearances was showing eigns of improvement. Tho country was white, jointy sandstone. The quartz in the footwall in tho main level was whibe, with stringers running through it. On tho Duncdin reef the quartz measured about 6ft wide, and showed gold* freely. Gold was occasionally eeon freely on the- north end of tho Middlo Parallel reef, which measured from 2ft to 10ft wide. The, quartz on the East Parallel roef was heavily charged with minerals of a good class. The manager has mado an inspection of the battery level up to tho air receiver, which is about 2000 ft from tho entranoo, and he found that it was in fairly good repair. DREDGING RETURN'S. DEVELOPMENT OF LOW LEVELS. (FBOM ODE Ova COHfiEBPONDENT.)

AUCKLAND, August 1. Driving north and. south on the Maria roef from No. 12 winze at the fifteenth level in the Talisman mine (KaraJifcahake) is in progress, and tso fax the drives liavo been advanced about 40ft each way. Going south a strong ore loading has been followed, and between 2ft and sft of quartz is showing in the present face, with only tho hanging wall exposed/ On the north iskl© tho drive appoare to havo gone off into the hanging wall country (leaving the main portion of the reef in the footwall), and will be turned moro to tho eastward. The encasing country rock in both directions continues of a, favourable description, but though the reef is carrying values, tho average assays ehow tho ore to bo below paying jioint in tho faces. It is the intention of tho management to push on the south drive as rapidly as possible in order to roach the fault some little dietanco ahead, the object being to drain the Nos. 6 and 19 winzes from tho fourteenth level and relievo tho pressure of water in the Talisman shaft. Should the connection provide an outlet, the sinking of tho shaft and winzes mentioned, tho random, of tho fifteenth level, will be resumed so as to permit of the 6poedy development of the Mania r*ef at greater depth. The drive south at No. 14 level is now out beyond where tho second run of milling ore on the dubbo chuto made at No. 13 level, and is being advanced in country rock As the lode lived further south at the thirteenth level developments in this direction will 'be continued at the fourteenth level, and rise will be put up to connect with No. 17 winze, which followed tho ore leading-some, distance down from No. 13 level. These works will oleer up the questions as to whether the reef has gone off into one of the walk or died out, and also show whether the values on the dubbo chute have pitched south going down. At No. 13 level the No. 8 crosscut to intersect the Welcome reef is out over 600 ft from the main south crosscut, and has passed tho point wh-sre the reefs should have been picked up. assuming that it maintained the samo dip as the No. 12 level. The large make of quartz (lying flat) encountered just above the thirteenth level lives through the main vein going , west, and carries pay ore to the point of contact, after which the v&hics are low. It is now being followed eaefc in good grade ore. and as it is quite clear that this is an independent make of etone, exploratory work will bo continued. In the Woodstock section of the property the crosscut west is now out about 350 ft from the shaft, and provided it goes tjpwn Shepherd'e reef should very shortly be intersected. The drives north and south on tho Maria roef aro each aibout 200 ft out from the shaft. Going north the lodw has not yet carried ore of payable grado, but fully IOOOft remain to be driven before the point is reached where milling quartz -was won by the old companies, whioh worked on the Taukani Hill. In the. drive south at 150 ft pay ore caino in on. a. vein Ift 9in wido on the west side of the drive, separated by about 2ft of mullock from the main lode. The run was followed for over 20ft, and wan then cut off by a fault corresponding , with tho fault showing in the old Woodstock Company's No. 6 level working overhead. A second fault some 30ft further on (also showing in the Woodstock workings) has displaced the main vein, and a craiscut is being projected to see if the lode has gone off into the east wall. Tho south face is still from, 150 to 200 feet north of where tho Woodetock . Company stopped. a block of payable ore at a higher level The various ore-pro-ducing points in the mine continue to furnish the usual supplies of milling quartz, and fch© stoping blocks are fully maintaining their widths and values. ■
