BURGLARY IN THE CITY

STEWART DAWSON'S ENTERED. JEWELLERY VALUED AT OVER £100 .STOLEN, A sensational jewellery robbery occurred in the city during tho late hours of Friday night or early on Saturday morning, Messrs Stewart Daw?ou's jewellery establishment in Princes street being entered by a burglar or burglars and jewellery valued at from £110 to £115 stolen. The night was in every way suited for such an act, being dark and stormy. Entrance was cti'ected by means of a window on the top floor facing tho Excelsior Hotel in Bowling street, and though tho manner iu which the window was closed did not offer much resistance, its opening was nevertheless engineered in an ingenious manner, showing' that, the individual who opened it was no novice. Once the catch bad been parted from 1 lie wood, the window was raised, and the intruders—if there were more than one—had only to stepiiwidp, and a largo quantity of valuables was at their disposal. Fortunately, however, it, is Die custom with the firm, and in fact Tiicet. lauge places, to lock the more valuable ami more easily disposed of articles away in a safe; but the burglnre made a clean sweep of everything left out that they considered worth taking, the value of the articles removed, as slated above, being equal to from £110 to £115. The swag was composed of bracelets, brooohes, olc. The firm states that, the jewellery contained in tho safe, upon which 110 attempt wa6 made, was valued at £30,000. The haul was certainly a very good one. Pome doubt exists as to how tlw window was reached, whether by the stone wall 1 that runs along tho rear of the building or by means of a bidder. Tho former ia hardly possible, and tho latter would 1* almost a matter of necessity if a«x>?s by the stone wall is put out: of the question. As soon as the fiivt employee arrived on Saturday morning one iglance was sufficient. to show him what had occurred. The police were communicated with, and . immediately sot about making investigatons. Up to last flight, however, no clue had .been obtained an to the perpetrator or perpetrators of the burglary.
