LESSONS FROM THE ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION
Sir,—Many useful lossoiis may be learned from the experience gained by tlie explorers during tlio recent Antarctic expedition, and the thanks of the community are due to (he Jcadcre of the Prohibition party for calling pointed attention to the. fact that- alcoholic wine was used only once, bitt. was found to lower tho temperature of the body. This statement i 6 important, and '•* made on the authority of Professor David. I was under the impression that some o[ your correspondents condemned its use, believing it to have quite a contrary effect, *nd that it was a stimulant which, excited the circulation, and that-, with excess, <; man became overheated with wine. 1 have noi used any alcoholic Jiquors for many years, and have nono in my house, but; now that I know its effects on such good authority I must lay in a stock to reduce my temperament, which is somewhat hot, and I can give it to. any of iny household who may lie feverish. It will be useful, too, if ] have hot words with anyone. Had the information been available at the Dreadnought meeting in Cliristehurch the other evening Mr T. E. Taylor might havo cooled the excitement by shouting for.tho audicncc instead of at Iliem. Another equally useful fact may bo gathered from the 6ume expedition—that is, tlie wholesome and enjoyable character of seals' blubber and of seal oil ns a beverage. I have not got these either in my house, but as I wish to havo on my tablo only that which is wholesome and palatable both for myself and my guests I want to got a drum—say, Sgai of seal oil. Can you tell mo where it is to be bad pure, and wliai. it costs? I want only the best —I tm, etc., Dunedin, April 17. SfffiEl.
