The quarter, however, shows' a decrease of nearly £'(0.000. Advances have increased in the'year by £603,000, but. decreased within the quarter by £54,000, so that tlio increased -demand for money is not progressive. Notes in circulation show an increase for the year of. £69,000, but a decrease for the quarter of £«,000. ' Coin and bullion «]-ow a decrease for the year of £280,000, but only of £18,000 for the quarter. The reduction was no doubt .justified by the absence of any urgent demands'- for coin, but seems to have proceeded far enough, the ratio being about Ss 3d in the pound on deposits at call and note circulation, but the Government and funded securities-held would give about 2s 4d in the pound more. The banks as a- whole still have ample resources, and there is nothing to call for special remark. In the Governin ant Savings Bank the excess of deposits over withdrawals is only £29,631, as compared with £100,94-9 for the corresponding quarter last
