THE DUNBDIN HOUNDS AT WAIKOUAIXI.
On Monday, the 21st inst., the Dunedin houuds journeyed to Waikouaiti to spend a day with their country friends. The number of followers from Dunedin was small, no doubt to be accounted for by their having had a run on the previous Saturday, and also the nnsettled state of the weather. However, those who did not attend ou the latter 6core will be disappointed, as they could not have had a finer day. The Hght*eers nc-re numerous, as every available hill-top was stndded with the inhabitants of Waikouaiti and surrounding districts. Amongst those who followed I noticed:—Mr Taggart (huntsman), on Turk; Mr F. Smith (whip), on Potens; Mr Stronach, on Auld Reekie; Mr P. Duncan, on a nice chestnut; Mr Buclilaud, on a bay; Mr Wjlsod, ou Kelly; Mr M'Kuy, on Freemason ;Mr Bray, on Stella; Mr Sloan, on Te Kooti; Mr 6. Duncan, on a promising young chestnut; Mr Scott, on Moody; Mr Orbell.onScratchback; Mr White, on Topsy ; Mr Schultze, on Bran Mash; Mr Field, on Backstay; Mr Sizemore, on a bay; Mr M'Bride, on Harem Scarem; Mr Rocheford, on a clipped black. The drag was sent away from Mr Schultze's house and the houuds laid on in his paddock. The first jump was a stiff double which most cleared in good style. At the fourth jump Moody unseated bis rider who, however, soon picked himself up and followed in hot pursuit. The jump out of Aitcheson's seemed to puzzle some of the local sports, but was cleared splendidly by Turk, Fotens, Kelly, and Auld Reekie. Nothing of importance happened in this ruu save that I occasionally saw a rider measuring his. length on the ground amongst whom were Messrs Orbell, Duncan, and Rocheford. After a few minutes' spell the hounds were laid on for the run home, which would have beeu an enjoyable as the first, had it not been marred by Te Kooti (who had jumped splendidly previously) running off a jump and falling heavily with his rider, who sustained rather serious injuries, but who, I am glad to hear is now out of danger and and on the way to recovery. The day's proceedings were wound up by the hounds being photographed, and those present partaking of tho hospitality of Mr and Mrs Schultze. Tally Ho.
