RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Eeiday, Maech 22. (Before Mr E. H. Carew, lt.H.)
Judgment was given for the plaintiffs, -with costs, in the followiug undefended cases:—Hallenstein Bros, and Co. v. William Oassidy (Cottesbrook), claim £15 2s, cm a dishonoured cheque ; Proctor, Jones, and Go. v. J. Sheddon CWinton), claim £9, balance due on a promissory note; Charles B. Keast (for whom Mr D. Macdonald appeared) v. John Johnston (Palmerston), claim £27, for interest due under a mortgage. John Baptist (Moeraki) v. Ales. Thompson.— Claim £16 14s 6d, damages for breach of contract to make a sail according to a certain pattern.—Mr Findlay (instructed by Mr Sim) appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr Haggitt for the defendant.—This partly heard case was con' eluded, when judgment was given for the de feudant, with costs. Equitable Insurance Association v. Alexander 3riinu.—Claim £43 13s 7d, on a judgment summons.—Mr A. Bathgate appeared for the plaintiff, but there was no appearance of the defendant.—An order was accordingly made for the payment of the amount claimed, with costs, by au instalment of £23 13s 7d on March 29, and the balance by monthly instalments of £613s 4d ; in default 28 days' imprisonment. John M'Lean (Green Island) v. Harry Wilson (Abbotsford).—Claim £5 4s Cd, on a judgment summons. —Mr Gallaway appeared for the plaintiff.—After evidence the defendant was ordered to pay the amount claimed, with costs, by instalments of 6s a week; in default seven days' imprisonment.
John Woods (Piue Hill) v. George Bunting.— Mr Solomon appeared for the plaintiff, and Sir Fitchett for the defendant.—ln this case it was alleged by the plaintiff that the defendant lighted a fire on the premises adjoining his (the plaintiff's), and that the fire spread from the premises of the defendant to those of the plaintiff, and burnt a haystack, six chains of fencing, a crop of grass, and some potatoes and turnips. The plaintiff, therefore, claimed to recover £38 4s as damages.—After this case had been partly heard, ifc was adjourned for further evidence
