OBITUARY.

The death is announced of the Most Rev. William Bernard tjllathorne, 0.5.8., Archbishop of Cabasa; of St. Mark's College, Oscott, near.Birmingham.

The Eight Rev. William Bernard Ullathorne, D.D., 0.5.8., was born at Pocklington, Yorkshire, in May 1806, was educated at St. Gregory's College, Downside, near Bath. Soon after his admission to the priesthood lie became a Missionary Father, and in that capacity visited Australia in 1832; wns subsequently appointed Vicar-general. He was the first Catholic priest who visited Norfolk Island. It was mainly through his evidence before a Parliamentary committee in 1838 that the transportation of convicts to the colonial penal settlement was stopped. On his return to England he took charge of the parish of Coventry. He was appointed Vicar ApOstolio of the Western District, England, and was subsequently consecrated Bißho'p of Hetalonia, in Juuc 1846. In 1848 he was transferred to the Central District, and iv September 1850, on the restoration of the Roman Catholic hierarchy, he waß appointed to (he See of Birmingham. When his health began to fail the Eight Rev. Edward lllsloy was appointed as auxiliary bishop of Birmingham. In 1887 Dr Ullathorne resigned his See, aud Dr Illsley succeeded him. On resigning Dr Ullathorne disclosed that he was the ambassador who negotiated with Pope Pius the Ninth for the re-establishment of the Roman Catholic hierarchy in England, which led to the great Papal Aggression scare in ISSO. It was on

tliis occasion that Lord Johu Russell, then Premier, proposed to bring iv the celebrated bill which led to

an equally celebrated cartoon of the Premier as a little boy chalkiug up " No Popery " on tile door of a Catholic dignitary and tlieu running away. In Sydney Dr Ullathorne's restless activity gained him the sobriquet of " Agitator-general of New South Wales."

Sir Thomas Gladstone, whose death was reported yesterday was a brother of Kight Hou. W. li. Gladstone. He was the eldest son of the first baronet, Sir John Gladstone, who, it may ba mentioned by the way, assumed by Koyal license the Burname of Gladstone in lieu of his patronymic Gladstones. Sir Thomas Gladstone was bom July 25, 1804, succeeded his father in 1851, was educated at Eton and Christchurch, Oxford (B.A. 1827, M.A.. 1830, D.C.L. 1853). He sat as M.P. for Queensborough in 1830, Portarlington 1832-5, Leicester in 1835-7, and Ipswich in 1812. He was a Conservative in politios. Ho married in 1835 Louise, daughter of Mr Bobert Fsllowes, of Shottesham Park, Norfolk, aud is succeeded iv the title by his son John Robert, born April 26th, 1552, Captaio Ist Battalion of the Coldstream Guards.
