MR CHAMBERLAIN AND THE GOVERNMENT. London, March 21

Mr Dawes, of Gray, Dawes, and Co., merchants, London, will probably purchase Mr Pearce's interest in the New Zealand Shipping Company. DB DALE ON SECULAR EDUCATION. Dr Dale, the well-known Independent minister, in a magazine article dealing with the religious and moral aspect of Australian life, doubts if secular education has at all impaired the religious faith of the colonists of Victoria. MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL. For beef and mutton prices are unchanged; stocks, however, are decreasing. The weekly returns of the Bank of England, published to-day, show the total reserve in notes and bullion at £15,4G0,000, and the proportion of reserve to liabilities at 42£ per cent., being an increase of £200,000 in the total reserve and an increase of \ per cent, in the proportion of reserve to liabilities, The total quantity of wool arrived to date is 263,600 bales, and sent forward "direct 53,000 bales. During some rioting in Buda-Pesth to-day Premier Tisza and the members of the Hungarian Cabinet were assaulted in the streets. Scenes took place in the.
