DUNEDIN NATURAL HISTORY AND MICROSCOPICAL SOCIETY.
The first geueral meeting qf the society war* held in the Museum ou Tuesday evening, 24th mst. Professor Parker, president, in the chair. There was an encouraging attendance of members. The following gentlemen wero elected members:—Messrs A. S. Paterson, F. Deauß, G.. H. Marsden, 11. Gibbs, Aloxauder Wilson, T. M.*' Hocken, P. Fulton, H. Fulton, G. Turton, J. Harvey, R. Hoeg, W. Davidson, J. E. Deuuiston, J. Rattray/r. Lamb, G. E. Eliott, A. Bathgate, and Dr Roberts.
After transaction of formal business, tho members present spent an agreeable hour in examining aud discussing the numerous objects of interest exhibited under tho microscopes. Theso included: (1) A number of beautiful stained embryological sections prepared by Professor Parker; (2) Selected preparations shown by Mr W. Graham ; (3) Amphipoda and other Crustacea, stained aud mounted by Mr C. Chilton; and (4) Diatoms from the diatomaccons deposits near Oamaru, propared by Dr DeLautour, and shown hy Mr Georgo M. Thomson.
It was resolved to hold an outdoor e*scuysion on 24th May.
—Doubtless tho Vanderbills could com. mand within 2-1 hours more money than any other family; and perhaps Russell Sage could command in two hours moro money than any other single person; and perhaps the capital of the Rothschilds is larger than that of any othor family, but net so easily lo be realised, The Vandorbilts, Jay Gould, Russell Sage, the Astors, the Goelets, D. 0. Mills, C. P. Huntington, and Sidney Dillon are all rich enough.—Now York paper.
