Auckland, April 27.

The Education Board have rejected the recommendation of the inspectors with respect to scholarships, and have resolved that no change shall be made in the present system.

MrM'Burney,the Victorian delegate ofthe Australasian Federated Seamen's Union, is at present in Auckland, aud is engaged in conducting the business connected with the strike at the Jubilee Steam Ship Company's office. In consequence of the withdrawal of the Government grant for tho Girls' High School, the Board of Education have decided to incur no further liability in connection with that institution at tho end of the present term, which expires on May 12, and it has been decided by the board to ask the Board of Governors of the Grammar School to make provision for the higher education of girls, as counsel's opinion has been given to the effect thafc the endow-~-"ts. now administered by the Board of Governors for the maintenance of the oramuiar School are equally applicable towards the establishment and maintenance of a Grammar School for girls.

Wellington, April 27. A divorce action is to be commenced in tho Supreme Court shortly, in which Thurston, a hotelkeeper.'of Marton, is petitioner, and Fletcher, until recently in the employ of Messrs Nelson, Moate, and Co., appears as co-respondent. The petitioner alleges that his wife left him in 1886, and has since been living with the co-respondent in Wellington.

Invercaeoill, April 27. At a meeting of the Southland Caledonian Society to-night it was resolved to wind up the affairs so far as present operations are concerned. The society is one of long standing, and was very successful until it was deemed necessary to purchase a block in towu for the annual sports. This was done afc considerable cost, the larger portion of money being borrowed. It has uot beeu fouud possible to utilise the grounds for any other purpose, consequently the society is paying about £150 a year as rent in the shape of interest on mortgages and other charges for two days' sports. This more than absorbs the proceeds of garnet), and the society has been going to the bad, henco the determination to wind up.
