PORT CHALMERS QUARRY RENTS.
TO THE EDITOR,
Sir, —I noticad a fow days ago that one of our councillors, in reply to <request 3 for information, gave so far as he was able that which wa^ sought. I should like to be informed if statements frequently made are true, viz., "thatthera are considerable sum? overdue by councillors as rants for quarries leased by them from the Corporation;" and if so, why steps are not taken to compel these sums to be paid, and thus help the town out of the position so much deplored by some of thsm. I think, Sir, if as much activity was shown in this matter as iv the collection of a few shillings due as rates, there would be no necessity to talk about putting on a special rate to meet present deficiency.—l am, &c,
