London, September 15th. The match between the Australians and Eleven Gontlemen Players of Scotland, at Edinburgh, was commenced to-day. The Home team went first to the wickets, and were all disposed of for 143 runs. .

Geahamstown, September 17th. A water-engine on a new principle has been designed by Price 8r05.,, and constructed to work 20 head of stamper*. Th« battery started to-day, and all went off satisfactorily. The battery has Bt»rted crushing. There was a large meeting of experts, who watched with interest the result of the experiment. Wangandi, Sent ember 17th, The railway extension from Kai Iwi to Waitotara was opened on Thursday by a special train containing a representative gathering of town and country residents. The visitors were hospitably entertained at Waitotara and Okehu. At the latter place a banquet was held in the goods shed. Speeches laudatory of tbe district and of the railway management under Mr Rotheram were made. Every speaker spoke of the imperative necessity for continuing the line northwards, so as to get to the Taranaki end. The line will be open to tbe public on Monday.
