ARE SAVING THEIR PENNIES

Canterbury Cricket Association Doing Without Coach This Season ! RE-SHUFFLES EVEN UP CLUB TTEAMS (From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Christchurch Representative!) V A re-shuffle of prominent players will put new life into Christchurch senior cricket this season, and added to that is the anticipation of the English tour. The clubs will be neck and neck when the barrier rises, for strong teams have been weakened and weak teams strengthened. ■ v .'. * ' The only dark spot m an otherwise bright outlook is the loss of Coach Jack Newman, who has returned to England, and will not be replaced. : v

THE boys will be thrown upon their own resources, but that will not make

them any the less keen. Transfers have come thick and fast, but they have not been occasioned by any trouble between clubs and players.

The Association just dropped a gentle hint that a few changes m the personnel of the competition teams would do the game good, and the players saw what was meant.

At a meeting of delegates last March, the matter of strengthening the weaker clubs was discussed, and a resolution was passed expressing the opinion that the

question could be overcome by the voluntary change-over of a few players from the stronger clubs to the weaker ones. And that accounts for the movement that is so apparent this season.' Last year's top teams, Riccarton and Old Boys, have lost the services .of five players between them, while "West Christchurch, St. Albans and Linwood benefit. P. Allen, B. Champness and C. Gibbs go from Riccarton to West Christchurch. 4 These transfers are the biggest of the change-over system, and should do a great deal m providing further interest m the competition. But for the loss of the three men, last season's victors will be unchanged, as the remainder of the 'Riccarton team^ are available. Old Boys will be without the help of lan Cromb, "Curly" Page and Jim Burrows. Cromb will go to strengthen the Linwood eleven, and Page will be turning out for St. Albans. Burrows will probably be seen m action again later m the season, but it is unlikely that he will turn out until after Christmas. East Christchurch reports "all well," [ and no changes are expected.

Two losses will be suffered by Old Collegians. J. Burrough has returned to England, and W. J. V. Hamilton will link up with Sydenham. New recruits to the rank 6of St. Albans are expected to work wonders with this eleven. this season. Firstly there is "Curly" Page, whose representative experience will be welcome, and Linwood and Sydenham give/ this club new blood In G. Condliffe and Charlie Oliver respectively. Ex-New Zealand slow bowler, Don. Sandman, will be playing again for St. Albans, and the only loss reported is Frank Woods, who will be under Linwood's banner. Sydenham has received a stinging body punch m the departure of Charlie and Bill Oliver, who have transferred. Bill goes to the. Sunnyside Club this season. G. Simmonds has also, deserted Sydenham ,and has: packed his bags altogether, now being m Wellington... Compensation for Sydenham come In the arrival of Hamilton from Old Collegians. Besides, tlie addition of the Riccarton players to its strength this season. West Christchurch also recruits R. J. S. Bean, the Old Collegians player, and also to be welcomed are M. Ward, of the Old Boys junior team, who will no. doubt be keeping wickets, Hemus, the ex-New Zealand rep. from Auckland, and an ex-Otago representative slow bowler, the left-handed Douglas. I
