CLEAN UP ALL GRADES

SOUTH HOLDS THE WHIP HAND SHIELD STAYS PUT i (From "N.Z. Truth's" Christchurch Rep.) WfITH the exception of second and third- " grade representative matches against Ashburton next Saturday, hockey m Canterbury has closed down. Canterbury has retained the N.Z. championship shield and also the Hatch Cup which carries the Primary Schools Dominion Championship. In addition, no Canterbury representative team m any grade has been beaten. These results, taken m conjunction with the even nature and high standard of the play m the first-grade comnetition. all point to the fact that Canterbury hockey has had a most successful season The Provinces most experienced players, Stan Bell, Bert Hore and Horace Snook, have retained their form and again should be available for future years. The most promising players who have come to light this year are Roy Neate, Yin Wells and Fred F.ullwood. These three promising players should stand an excellent chance of selection m the New Zealand team which is to visit Australia next season. • Next m order of merit come Eric Dash, Ben and. Charlie Rogers, and Charlie Hore, all of whom have rendered good j service to the province. Other promising young players who have not yet caught the selector's eye are Ron. Thompson, Stan Andrews, Leo Oliff, Ned Prebble, Jack Mounsey and H. Norris. If these six colts develop next season; as they promise to do, then Canterbury should not lack talent. Canterbury's live-wire president, Leslie L. Smith, has made a success „ of his first year m this office. The secretary, Arthur Graham,' is a great worker, but his close association with the .Trinity .. Club hinders his efficiency as an Association official. The most experienced and hardest worked officer is Charlie Bellamy, who appoints all referees and who m addition is a member of tlie competitions committee. There are some Association members who attend few meetings and who do little sub-committee work. They should be tossed overboard and replaced by men who will take a more serious view of their duties and responsibilities m the management of this amateur sport.
