The Ponies Learn Their Grammar At Eden Park

BEFORE both teams lined out. Ponsonby had two points lead on their victors, and had they won the game that day, then there was the possibility of a happy little function. Grammar, with a bustling pack, kept the Ponies' backs from stepping it out and seemed to put a halter on them m effectiveness of combination. On the day's play, however, both teams were evenly matched, and scored m an identical manner, except that an easy penalty for the Grammar boys happened to let them past the post. Grammar showed a dashing game m forward play, and although Ponsonby fed their backs at every conceivable opportunity, unfortunately there was not the desired combination to carry off the spoils of victory. Hook was the Idol of every Ponsonbyite when he scored the only try m the first

quarter, whilst little Corner equalised soon after by gaining three easy points from a penalty. Before the half-time gong sounded, Lucas, after a neat passing bout, scored and converted,, and after Savory had scored away m tho corner, the half-spell's tally was Ponsonby 8, Grammar 6. In the third spell, Grammar went into the fray like a pack of demons, and Batty, who was going great guns, went over for a try which Corner converted. A. Knight got across later, . and Ponsonby had six of the best to get to make it evens. -, Three of these were obtained when Solomon got an unconverted try, and battle as they knew how,- the Pony boys could get no more. « It was a ding-dong tussle, and the issue m doubt right until the referee blew his whistle.
