PASHA AND ALLEY LOCK HORNS

TERRIBLE TURK STOPS BIFF IN HIS PANTRY FROM TORPEDO TOM THOMAS WAS ALSO A PLAYFUL GOAT The talkies put the borer into the legitimate amusement business, and the "profesh" went Poverty Pointwards, where he exists on the triumphs of yesterday. — and thin air. . . '*

I CLiESH and blood entertainments were wiped out of existence by the | canned variety of Holly i woqd, so; it seemed. . Then up rose another generation to smite Hiram K. Kerosene and his squawking ' satellites. Pa*ntomime was revived. . But instead of a gigantic company all that was needed m this new concern was two thick-neck-•ed:, cauliflower-eared gentlemen — the wrestlers. Heaven defend New Zealand-! Two burlesque artists, one known as Tom' Alley . and the other its Kara Pasha, found that they could pull the same stuff, hot only for one night, but for two, and; yes, even three. Present indications are ' that ■ the pair have m view the pbssibility of making Oscar Asche's Chu Chin Chow, record look like a decimal point. They may succeed, for if the Mormon Mauler and the Dardanelles Defender know nothing else they are well schooled m comedy, and that is no error. -.■■•'. iAs a matter of fact were it not for the kindly act of associations billing them, as "wrestlers" they would be the only ones m possession of that, information. Monday night at Wellington saw the third spasm of this, broken down Keystone.' .;■■•■-•■ For fully half of the evening the pair danced round, grimacing and gy r rating. They would bound and leap and at times, so concerned were they m; emulating the dancing dervish that it was pardonable to imagine that the ring had been wired and every so often somebody turned the juice on. Alley, a greart friend of the Man- ' assa Mauler, to wit one John Harrison Dempsey, scowled and skidded, but it was raw stuff. Even a sympathetic crowd would not fall for. the boloney./ i- Kara is a little bit better with his acting. Apparently he puts his heart m the play, and when it came to a question of really doingi some wrestling he gave Alley a start and a licking.

In fact, if Alley wants to beat Kara! ■he. will have tp start the previous evening or catch the Turk while he is dreaming of Abdul Abul"bul Amir, majordomo ; of the harem down by the Bosphurus. Or did we 'hear the other day that A. had run foul of a be-whiskered bohunk «called Ivan? The fifth is when the alarm clock goes off . and then a fall has to be registered. The Turk set the pot amd caught .a^crayfish. By legerdemain, he transformed the cray into a Boston crab and took the sunshine out of Alley. They started to act the goat m tlie next, at least Alley did. He < lowei-ed his head in' approved style and butted poor old Pasha m the pantry. •Not having had a meal of lead headed nails, Pasha's potato portmanteau ,failed to stand the strain, and it was all square at the sixth hole with two to play. Like the. song the din was heard afar m the seventh,- and Alley again started to butt, but Abdul, pardon Kara, was singing under his breath, or perhaps it was the wind whistling through his teeth on its way down te the great open spaces m his bellows. Alley adjusted his horns, put his head down and dived. The torpedo went home and. Pasha was pained and peeved. Covering up his deck he watched and as Alley came m the second time Kara dropped his head' and Alley saw so many stars that he must have imagined that the band was playing the Barcarolle from the Tales of Hoffman, Nights of Love with Stars Above, and so on. Attacked with a violent headache Alley dropped to the mat and Pasha fell on him to gain ! - the winning fall. Then dragging' himself up Kara stumbled to the ropes and, suspended, from his middle, threatened to emulate, the sea-sick passenger who has heard mention of pork. As an entertainment it was a success, but as an exhibition of wrestling it made Sinbad the Sailor look like grand opera.
