N.Z. Truth THE NATIONAL PAPER THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1930. HERE'S LUCK!

No sporting event attracts such world-wide interest as the America Cup. Even the cricket tests and the Davis Cup matches somehow seem! to pale into insignificance; we fail to feel m them a personal interest whereas we have that feeling m the case of, the America Cup.

Without Sir Thomas Lipton, we would not feel, of course, the same interest m the races for the yachting blue ribbon. Now eighty years old, he has, during the last 30 years, made six attempts to regain the Cup which left England's shores exactly 79 years ago.

Never disheartened by defeat and always optimistically talking of the next "Shamrock" and the next try, Sir Thomas is as popular on one side of the Atlantic as on the other. He is, indeed, a figure of the chivalric age, transplanted into the hurry and bustle of modern life, and his quest of the America Cup reminds one strangely of the fairy tales of the old-time knights setting out m quest of beauty m distress or m search of the Holy Grail.

That this sporting baronet's six attempts to win the America Cup have done much to cement friendship between England and America is beyond question. International sporting events promote friendship, appreciation and better understanding ; but none has done so to the same extent as Sir Thomas's visits to America with his various "Shamrocks."

At time of writing, he is one down m the series; but everybody is wishing him good-luck m the other congests, and even the Americans themselves would like to see this gallant old warrior carry off the laurels for which he has struggled so long and so goodnaturedly. Here's luck to the "Shamrock V.!"
