Gaol For Eden
"THE police report satisfies me that you are one of the lowest and most dangerous types. . ." Thus Judge Reed summed up Arthur Herbert Eden (42), recently found guilty of an attempted serious offence and common assault on a girl of 19. The case was reported m "N.Z. Truth" last week. Continuing, his -honor said: "It j is clear that you used your shop for the purpose of defiling young girls. I do not know how many you did defile. I would not be doing my duty to the public if I did not send you to gaol for a lengthy time." With these words Mr. Justice Reed sentenced Eden to imprisonment with hard labor for five years. Before the accused was sentenced,.his counsel, Lawyer Singer, made an application for a re-trial, admitting as he did so that he knew of no legal grounds for his request. Referring to the re-trial, his , honor observed: "I would have no hesitation m refusing it, even if I had the power. I quite agree with the verdict of the jury." iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiuiiimiiiiniiiiitiiiiiiiiiliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii:
