(By "Salisbury.") Since the drenching rain of Saturday and Sunday the Wingatui trainers have been different men. The hardness of the tracks previous to that had been a source of worry to them. The defeats of Bonnie Winkie and Fulmen at Napier Park were a body blow to local punters. Mr. Fisher made no secret of the fact that he thought his horses would be hard to beat. It Is tho lot of eVery trainer to experience a lean period, and. Just at present It would seem to be Dave Wilson's turn. He has been able to do nothing right lately, and with Roseday out for a long spell and Corn Rigs gone m the wind, the prospects of the stable are not particularly bright. When properly wound up Kerb can reel off a slick six furlongs, but she is not m racing shape at present. Lochella, Silent King, Cartoon, and General Advance leave for Australia by tho Moerakl to-day. Cyril Dawson, the stable horseman, goes over with them to do the riding. Cartoon should do well on the other side. He won the last three hurdle races ho started ln, besides winning over a mile and a quarter at the Hunt Club meeting and running second to Coastguard over tho same distance at the Dunedin Cup meeting. Baldowa ls still on the easy list. His next mission will probably be the Riverton Cup. Last week Alf Hill had tho misfortune to lose Basso, his recent Wellingt6n purchase. He succumbed to acute inflammation of tho kidneys. Fred Shaw is a busy man these days, and has no fewer than 14 horses m active work. They are Mantua, Matatua. All British, Bon Skirl, Petal Dust, Prompter, Staff Officer, Barricon, Humboldt, Romance, Red Admiral, Olympia, Sir Walter, and Red Sol. The last-mentioned has not yet been taken possession of by his new owner. There are several. who would like to get hold of the Central-owned hack Ayrburn, but they are not likely to do that. Con Whito knows when he has got a good one. Francalsc can gallop all right, but nho is rattle-headed at the post and usually runs her races before the tapes are skied. Mazama is ln nice order for thc jumping season ahead nnd is working well on the Southland tracks. Warhaven has rounded up a little lately, but he Is still a long way from being m racing condition. Master Sandstone is going to bo a corker. He Is only doing easy tasks at present, but will be right for the Raster meetings. •■■■'■■
