SCULLING

Hannan and Arnst. Having finally disposed of W T . Mc Devitt, J. P. Hannan says he is now keen on meeting Am.st, and has hopes of arranging to row Dick on the Northern Wairoa. Arnst has done no rowing since he was so sensationally defeated by Darcy Hadfield at Wanganui over two years ago. A fortnight or so before his race with Hadfield, Dick was going so well that he appeared to be sure to win. On the day ho was confident,* and thought he could indulge Hadfield m the lead for a mile or so and then gather him up. Heartened by the lead he secured early Darcy went much better that day than Arnst anticipated, arid Dick found "when he tried to overhaul Hadfield that he could mako no impression on the leader, tho result being that Darcy had an easy win. Whether or not Arnst will agrco to row Hannan remains to/ bo seen, but the chances aro that ho will if a decent purse is provided, but it is not at all likely thero will be any money on tho side. If tho public anywhere aro willing to put up purses for such races there will always be found scullers who will compete for tho prizes, but thoso sort of races do no good for tho game; it is only the genuino man finding backing for a substantial amount that counts. A well-known rowing enthusiast, who witnessed tho regatta m Wanganui last Saturday, was greatly impressed with the performances of young 11. Dyke who won both tho junior and ' maiden sculls. This youth— he is only 19 years of nge — scored very easy wins m each case, and he bids fair to make a name for himself as a sculler. He stands 6ft lin^nd scales 11.13 stripped. Ho displayed very good style, a, feature being his long. .^sweeping stroke, into which he put plenty of power. Heis keen on rowing and if taken m hand by &Uly Webb would m a year or two perhaps develop into a champion. Tho Wanganui people aro keen on finding a man enpnble of winning back tho championship of the world, and no doubt they will see to it that young Dyko is given every opportunity to show if he has the right stuff m him for the job.
