AMATEUR ATHLETICS

Notes And Comment (By "Starter.") H. E. Wilson benefit, Athletic Park, Saturday next. N.Z. championships Dunedin to-day. Strong teams have been entered for the championships; Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin being especially well represented. Wellington should be able to retain the Shield, but will not find the going easy. The 100 yards has drawn a big field. Morgan (Dunedin) seems to have the best chance with Elliott (Auckland), Jenkins and Tracy (Wellington) disputing the other places. Tracy must win the 220: Morgan and Elliott will be his most dangerous opponents. Jenkins, the other Wellington man, has littlo chance m this event. Tracy and Taylor (Canterbury) are likely to have a battle royal m the 440 yards. Taylor is fast returning to his best form and is always at his best when the need is greatest. Taylor (Canterbury) for the 880 yds. He should be too good for Melrose or Campbell. Yallance (Auckland) for the mile, and Dupresne (Wellington) for the three miles. Lander (Wellington) for the 120 hurdles and Shirley (Auckland) for the 440 hurdles. Mcintosh (Wellington) should win both walks. Dunedln's chances with McKenzie depends much upon the judges. Shirley (Auckland) for the high Jump. Gribble (Auckland) for the broad jump and Wilton (Wellington) for tho hop, step. Harvey (Wellington) for the pole vault. McHolm (Canterbury) throwing the hammer. Brown (Wellington) for putting the shot. Morgan (Wefllngton) throwing the javelin and McHolm (Canterbury) throwing the discus. Wellington should also win the relay. The 100 yards ladles' event ls causing much interest. The Auckland team would simply not hear of the defeat of their nominee, Miss McNeil, when "Starter" saw them In Wellington during the week, and Otago set much store on two of their entrants. But "Starter" ls confident that Miss Swinburne will provide a surprise (for the other entrants) and this race will be credited to Wellington. Next year there will be inaugurated a series of home-and-homo contests between Wellington and Auckland. This has been worked for for years past by Mr. A. C. Kitto and now seems to bo catching the fancy of tho Auckland Centre. There is no doubt that such contests will be productive of much interest and enjoyment for competitors and public alike.
