Through the white, dazzling, daylight of the hallowed Sabbath morning, the drunkard went, staggering, blindly homeward. The church bells rang out through the clear, exhilarating air, calling the worshippers to prayers and repentance. Zig-zagging from curbstone to fence hi® reeled, clutching a bunch of chrysanthemums of virgin whiteness as a peace nj. fering to his waiting, fierce-eyed wifp. Onward he staggered, keeping his biilnnce as if by a miracle. Suddenly a fro.cfclefaced yelling youngster rushed past ami took his attention off the business of keeping his balance, and he was lost.; For a moment he gazed at her with n dull, fishy stare, then reeled backwards,, recovered by a superhuman effort, went forward too fast—then yelled, "Curse the beer !" and dived into the dust lightly clutching the flowers. Then the unseen drink devil triumphantly clapped a cloven hoof on to' the fallen neck| and his shrill,, mocking laughter rang out above tha aoletaa tolling of the chore* bells 4
