WELLINGTON, Tuesday An indication that the Government would give preference to the purchase of British motor-cars before American cars was given by Mr T. H. McCombs (Government —Lyttelton) in the Budget debate in the House of Representatives today. He suggested that New Zealanders who wished to help Britain should replace their American motorcars with British models. Mr McCombs said that everyone in New Zealand seemed to think that the thing to do was to buy an American car, but if they wanted to do something to help Britain one of the biggest things they could do would be to change over from an American to a British car. j "Will they get a licence?" asked Mr j W. WANGANTJI, Tuesday The Wanganui District Committee today reheard the appeal of I. Galvin, a jockey, against his suspension, in connection with tho handling of. Airport in the Manawatu Winter Cup at Awapuni on June 16. It upheld its former decision to increase the Manawatu Racing Club judicial committee's sentence of three months' suspension to six months. The appeal had been referred back to the committee by the Racing Conference judges for a rehearing. CHILD MENTAL PATIENTS INSTITUTION AT LEVIN (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday The property at Levin which used to bo the Woraroa Boys' Training Farm, but has been an Air Force training station for several years during the war, is now being used by the Mental Hospitals Department for the accommodation of children in the same class as those at the Templeton farm colony, near Christchureh. The patients which the department has at Templeton and intends to have at Levin are children who are mentally deficient, but are not insane, including some who are adult in years, but have remained childish mentally. They require protection from the hazards of normal life, but live and work satisfactorily in an institution. There tire now at Levin 42 boys whose homes are in the North Island and who have been transferred from Templeton. It is intended that both sexes shall be accommodated, but the buildings will have to be altered before girls arrive. With minor alterations, the buildings will accommodate from 100 to 120 and they could be adapted to take from 600 to 700, although Templeton's present population is only 426. The tmildings include a picture theatre. The farm consists of about 200 acres, and tho boys will find occupation in farming and gardening. The girls will work in the laundry and at sewing and other handwork. REQUEST FOR RAILCARS (0.C.) WHANGAREI, Tuesday The need for the use of railcars on tho line from Auckland to the North has on several occasions been brought forward by Northland organisations and representations to this end have been made to the Minister of Railways, Mr Semple, bv the member for Bav of Islands. Mr S. W. Smith. The Minister has replied to Mr Smith that, owing to the difficulty of securing the necessary equipment from abroad, the department's railcar programme has been considerably retarded, but that when such equipment is available the question of using such cars on the northern railway line will be given full consideration.
