LONG CAKKER ENDS MR. C. H. CLINKARD'S DEATH SERVICES TO ROTORUA (0.C.) • "ROTORUA, Monday The death -occurred this evening after a long illness of Mr. C. H. Clinkard. aged 79, the first Mayor of Rotorua and twice member of Parliament for the Rotorua electorate. Mr. Clinkard had a long association with public life, both in Northland and Rotorua. He began work in the kauri forests at the age of 11, starting business later as a timber merchant and contractor at Kaukapakapa. He was elected Mayor of Rotorua. when the borough was formed in
Mr. Clinkard first contested a Parliamentary election in 1905 in the LiberalLabour interests against .Mr. K. W. Alison, the then sitting member for Waitomata. In 19lio he was only 300 votes behind the sitting member for Rotorua, and three years later, as the nominee of the United Party, he defeated -Mr. P. F. Hockly. He lost the seat to Mr. A. K. Moncur in 193"). For 20 years Mr. Clinkard was chairman of different school committees, member and also clerk and engineer ol the Kaukapakapa Road Board, and member of the Rotorua County Council. He is survived by five sons.
