STORY TO UNDERTAKER
ATTEMPTED FALSE PRETENCE Pleas of guilty were entered by a carpenter, Archibald Cooper Benson, aged -10, to charges of default of maintenance and attempted false pretences, heard in the Police Court yesterday. "Accused went to an undertaker on January 30 to make arrangements for his mother's funeral," said Sub-Inspec-tor Pender. "He told the undertaker that he had £SO to pay expenses, but could not touch it immediately, and asked the undertaker to lend him £1 for telegrams of advice to relatives. His mother is still alive, as the undertaker discovered when inquiries were made." Accused also admitted that ho owed £1(36 for arrears of maintenance up to April last year. On the charge of failing to pay maintenance accused was sentenced to three months' hard labour. On the attempted false pretences charge a term of two months with hard labour was imposed, the sentences to be concurrent.
