DAMAGE BY FIRE
WOOLSTON TANNERIES LOSS £7OOO TO £IO,OOO FLAMES SUPPRESSED IN HOUR [BT TELEGRAPH —rRESS ASSOCIATION] CHPJSTCHURCH. Friday Damage estimated at between £7OOO and £IO,OOO was done by fire to-night in the sole-finishing department of Woolston Tanneries, Limited. The lire had a strong hold on the interior of the building, a brick one, when the alarm was given'at about six o'clock. Four fire engines rushed to the scene and, by the use of five leads, had the outbreak under control in an hour. It is thought the fire originated in the automatic stoker in the centre of the building, and the drying room in this section was practically gutted, lho warehouse end of the building was damaged only by water and smoke. No sooner had the firemen brought the Woolston tanneries fire under control than they received a call to the brush faetorv of Bunting and Company, Limited, in "Fife Street. The fire here was in the boiler house, where a sawdust bin had caught fire. It was suppressed before a great deal of damage had been done.
