CENTENNIAL AFFAIRS
HARBOUR BOARD DONATION RETURN SUGGESTED NO MARINE ACTIVITIES * A proposal by the Auckland Harbour Board that its donation of £2OOO to the Centennial Fund should be returned, as the programme of marine activities was to be abandoned, .was received at a meeting of the metropolitan executive of the Auckland Provincial Centennial Council last night. It was decided that a deputation consisting of Sir Ernest Davis, Mr. J. A. C. Allum and Mr. I. J. Goldstine should interview the board regarding the matter. Recommendations by sub-committees that marine activities, including the Centennial anniversary regatta, and all school Centennial celebrations be abandoned, were adopted. The Maori race sub-committee was invited to reconsider a recommendation that all celebrations and displays with which it was concerned be suspended for the duration of the war. The fine _ arts sub-committee presented detailed proposals bearing on its reduced programme, which now consists of a, national art exhibition for a fortnight in April and May, and music festivals. It recommended -that the proposed music competitions be abandoned, that a music festival bo held between May 9 and 19, including two performances of the opera "Faust," and that subsequently • two selected plays be performed. The committee stated that 100 entries had been received in the Centennial song competition and an award would be recommended later. The report was adopted. The executive approved for submission to the> National Council the I)ei onport Borough Council's proposal for a Centennial memorial in the form of _ a building to cost £-ISOO and containing a public' library, Plunket, ambulance and women's rest rooms and a meeting room for sports organisations"
