QUEEN STREET FIRE
DAMAGE to bakehouse BRIGADE'S SMART WORK Fire broke out in the bakehouse of the Kottage Kake Kitchen, 274 Queen Street, City, shortly after nine o'clock last night, and did fairly considerable damage to electric ovens, n&ixers and wooden fixtures. The prompt arrival of fire engines from the Central, Western Districts and Parnell Brigades resulted in the outbreak being quickly suppressed. The occupier of the premises, Mr. H. W. Bennet, was unable to assess his loss.
Four engines from the Central Fire Brigade arrived within a minute of the alarm being given. Flames were leaping from the first floor windows, where the bakehouse is located, but leads of [loses quickly reduced the intensity of the fire and within ten minutes the outbreak was quelled. Salvage sheets spread over perishable goods on counters and fixtures in the shop below saved them from damage by water and smoke. Beneath the bakehouse are the premises of Shane's Ladies' Specialists, where little damage was done to the stock. The building is owned by the Noton Estate.
