DEFENCE OF NEW ZEALAND The defence of Ivew Zealand was a question of importance 50 years ago. The following extract concerning the inspection of forts and volunteers appeared in the New Zealand Herald on October 17, 18S9: —- "Major-General Edwards, who arrived in Auckland on Tuesday, has los* no time in entering on the work or inspection of the fortifications ana defence forces of' the colony, ana tiie inspection was commenced an early hour yesterday morning. Early m tlie forenoon General lCdwards, arconipanie by Colonel Humfrey, & LieutenantColonel Hume and otJicr oftcers, inspected the forts and Permauei Artillery. Some firing practice too* place . with the Nordenfeldt aiul 1 appearing guns and the shooting both eases was most satisfactory, nio especially that with the six-inch. - appearing gun, in which, at a range 2700 yards, the flagstaff was carried away about a foot above the buoy, general inspection of volunteers held at the drill-shecl last night an perhaps on no previous occasion « the capacity of the old iron buikinig been so much taxed for a purpos this sort."
