HAWERA HORSES

FRIESLAND IN FORM NOTIUM FINISHES STRONGLY WINSOME LU DISPLAYS DASH [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAWERA, Thursday A heavy, fog sertously hampered training operations at Hawera this morning, when horses engaged at Stratford were given their final gallops. Most of the fast work was done on the plough, which was fast. On the plough Fiancee (Edgecombe) hit out freely over half a mile, but could not be timed. The Siegfried filly is racing very solidly at present and took no harm from her outings * at Feilding. She is an acceptor for two races on Saturday, but which she will contest has not been decided yet. Friesland (Prisk) appeared to be going nicely alongside Dark Eagle (Sexton) at the end of six furlongs in 1.16. Both horses are in first-class order. Friesland is more forward . .than many may consider.

Student Prince (Cole) comfortably defeated Flamberge (Eley) over six furlongs in 1.18 1-5. Having been oil the scene for several weeks Student Prince may require a race before being seen at his best.

Notium (Sexton) finished well at the end of a mile in 1.41. He is to contest the Anniversary Handicap on Saturday, and should be prominent. He appears to be at the peak of his form.

Lickem (Prisk) and Prime Quality (Sexton) ran six furlongs in 1.18. Lickem will probably start in the Flying Handicap. He has displayed partiality for the Stratford track in the past. Prime Quality should be favoured by the roomy course. Rainleh (Farland) covered six furlongs at three-quarter pace. He is backward.

With the assistance of Lady Boden (Fryer) over the last half-mile Winsome Lu (Farland) reeled off six furlongs in 1.16 1-5, after recording 26s for the first two. Winsome Lu is exEected "to take a. lot of beating in the igh-weight handicap at Stratford. On tiie course proper, with the trestles wide out, Chief Lord (Ryan) got to the end of half a mile in 51 3-ss. Kilometre (Holland) gained two lengths' break on Yeldette (Sexton) and maintained the advantage throughout half a mile in 50 4-os. Kilometre is improving. Maahanui (Toki) gave a satisfactory display of jumping over seven hurdles. He shaped creditably in the hurdle races at Opunake and Ashhurst two months ago, and may be a light-weight prospect in the Autumn Hurdles. AWAPUNI DOINGS HORSES FOR STRATFORD DAINtY SUE IN GOOD TRIM VASCONES AND VEREY LIGHTS [from our own correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Thursday

Thero are four Awapuni horses engaged at Stratford on Saturday and they should prove capable of getting some of tho stake-money.

Dainty Sue is an acceptor for the Anniversary Handicap. She covered extra ground at Feilding, where, with any sort of a run, she would have finished better than fourth. She is a good mare and worked nicely over sei r en furlongs this morning. She wss ridden by W. J. Broughton and tho pace was on only for the last half-mile, which took her 53.J5, the last three furlongs in 395. Pas de Cheval (J. Chaplin), another candidate for Stratford, was not bustled to break 40s for the last three of four furlongs, and he should be moro forward than he was at Feilding. Vascones (Tattersall), who won two races at Feilding, started scratchily, but lie was moving smoothly at the end of four furlongs in 52 3-ss. Verey Lights (H. Stewart) galloped a mile, making light of her task, which she completed in 1.46 3-5. She is accepted for the Budge Memorial at Stratford and, if a suitable light-weight cpii be secured, she should run a good race. All the fast work was done on the J)lough, which was not particularly ast. Among those out being exercised were Beaupartir, who does not look as if he had had two hard races at Auckland, and Old Bill j who looks better than he did before his Feilding Cup win. Oratory's racing career was concluded at Feilding on Monday, when she raced for the last time. The brilliant daughter of Gainscourt and Oratress was turned out when L. G. Morris returned from Ellerslie and it is understood that she will be mated with Bulandshar.
