ASSAULT ALLEGATIONS
REMUERA WOMAN'S EVIDENCE WITNESSES FOR PROSECUTION Five charges were preferred against a tailor, George Cecil Horry, aged 31 (Mr. Sulli van), in the Supreme Court before Mr. Justice Callan yesterday. Accused was charged with demanding with menaces £2, with intent to steal, from Eva Kathleen Hendry; with attempting to steal £2; with assault, with intent to commit a crime; with assault so as to cause actual bodily harm; and with assault. The charges, to which accused pleaded not guilty, related to tho same complainant and to tho same alleged incident. Mr. V. R. Meredith prosecuted. Eva Kathleen Hendry, married woman, of 32 Armadale Road, Remuera, said at 10.25 a.m. on the morning of December 20 accused knocked at the back door of her home. Ho said he was an inspector from the Power Board investigating a leakage. He asked if he could "look at the meter, which was in the hall. After asking a number of questions, accused said, "That is all. Mrs. Hendry." Alleged Threat Witness said she began walking toward the kitchen when accused, from behind, caught hold of her and held so tightly that she thought she was choking. Both fell to the floor and accused said, "Keep quiet or 1 will kill you," which he repeated later. Accused said, "It is money 1 want —£2 for Christmas." Witness said that on regaining her feet she went toward the sink as if to .have a drink, then suddenly ran out of the door and screamed. Accused turned back into the house and ran down the front path. The whole incident occupied live or six minutes. Witness was injured about the face. Allan James Reus haw, hairdresser, said at about 10.55 or a few minutes later on the morning of December 20 accused came in for a trim and to have his moustache taken off. Accused seemed "hot and bothered." Traffic Officer's Evidence
William Maddigan, assistant traffic superintendent of the Auckland Transport Board, said a tram clocked in at the corner of Market Road and Remuera Road at 10.36 a.m. on December 20, and clocked in at the bottom of Queen Street, via Wellesley Street, at 10*38 a.m. Gustavus Powell, warder at the Auckland Prison, said accused was released from there on tho morning of December 20. Accused had been in prison for about five months. Cross-examined by Mr. Sullivan, jvitness said he had heard that accused had £8 on him when he left the prison. Accused had given no trouble when in prison. Detective H. A. Wilson, crossexamined. said there was no evidence, other than that of complainant, that accused was in Remuera that morning. Before the Court adjourned until Monday morning, Mr. Meredith said the Crown had one more witness to call. Mr. Sullivan stated that lengthy evidence would' be given for the defence.
